Greetings HILLS Guest, So nice to have some one else come on board with memories of Tebury, although you fall short in years when compared with Monica Mary and myself. Not so sure about Paul and Normasnpants however. Still, glad to have you on board. I remember PEGLARS sweet shop and garage way back in the 1940's , they did repairs but had no cars for sale like the present. VICK was the Butcher just a couple of doors away, followed by HEALEY ? Dairy shop. then the Greyhound. Next door was the Police Station and House wher Sgt.EDWARDS lived, he had two sons around my age, CHARLES and JOHN. Now you have found the forum I hope you will come back again. If Paul comes on to this message, I wonder if he could advise me of the Psalm played by the three hourly chimes. I did post a message in respect of the bells etc to Monica and Paul, but in haste lost it. Not having my own computor, my time is often restricted at the Library. No complaints though, it is all free to use. Floreat Tetburia, Cliff.B

Hi all, I haven't read through the whole thread as it's 7 pages long, so sorry if I duplicate anything. But can anyone tell me what Eve's Kabin is/was (opposite The Priory)...I'm most intrigued. Thanks.

Hi Newish to Tetbury, Once again forum at a standstill. What once was "seriously underused forum" now seems to attract lots of viewers, but few contributors. In my time in Tetbury The Priory was a large private residence just off the Chipping, and the grounds ran all the way down to London Road. I guess you now refer to the buildings that many years ago were the stables and are now a pub. As for a shop across the road, I only remember the gas works having a shop window there . I think it later became a "Do it Yourself" store. I have a memory of this window having bells for sale just after the end of World War 2. These bells were cast from sxcrap aluminium from German planes shot down over Britain, and priced at £5.00, expensive at that time. They were very patriotic and had Churchill's face on them. I think the proceeds were for some charity, but I have no idea which. Can anyone help me with that? I have seen one on a TV antiques showsome time ago. Feed back from any one of our many readers would be appreciated. Cliff.

Hi Cliff et al,
I would say this forum is underused simply because it can be read by non members picking up post's via Google, plus some of the other reasons I mentioned in my PM. Anyway, Yes the Priory in your day was a private house located in the Chipping (now a home for the elderly) the stables were accessed via Eccles Court lane.
Eve's Cabin was a tiny confectionary shop owned by the late Mr's Peglar, I remember this shop from the early 1970's rows of Cadbury & Fry's chocolate bar's lined neatly up on the top of the glass counter display, large glass sweet jars on shelves behind the counter and boxes of potato crisps under the back of the internal shop window. Not forgetting the bottle's of Corona "pop" in crates next to the small fridge...deposit being 5 new pence it was printed on the screw cap !
At the time I was living in Court Field Road, we extended the garden path burying many Corona pop bottle's in the footing's -- the deposit wasn't worth collecting. Next door to Eve's Cabin was Jim Smith's a carpenter / builder's shop the aroma of newly cut wood and wood shavings blowing onto the footpath are vivid in my mind today.
Going back another 30 or so years I've recently found out why the Warn Barton Brewery shut closed down in the early 1930's, the Tetbury Warns went bankrupt !! Stroud Brewery bought up the "good will"

Greetings to all readers/visitors to Seriously underused forum. I know you are all out there because the hits keep going up. How about some of you having a little input. I am still hoping that some one who attended Tetbury Grammar School at the same time as my self will get in touch. Where in the World are some of you? What happened to you after School., National Service, did your education help you in later life and work? Come on rattle a few keys.Cliff B.

Now 16 days since I last appealed on this forum for input, or contact with anyone from my past. I guess on my next trip to Tetbury will have to make a check on burials. I guess a visit to an old folks home may have a few results, that is for those that still have their marbles. I doubt that I fall into the category of the person who wrote in his auto-biography, " I DO NOT HAVE AN ENEMY IN THE WHOLE WORLD. I HAVE OUT LIVED THEM ALL! . Come on, dust down your keyboards, exercise your arthritic digits, get your brains working before it is too late. Cliff B.

Well all of my readers it looks as if I will have to rely on the old fashioned telephone for Tetbury News. Have just received by phone information of the death of a Tetburian who was visiting in the USA. Now waiting to see if there will be a chance to pay respects, and maybe meet up with those who have not caught up with modern technology. Cliff B.

I have some happy memories of Tetbury in my youth. I was brought up in Nailsworth but had some good friends in your fair town. I now live in Australia and would love to reconect with the Jolly family. Tom was a great mate of mine so if there is any info on his family please pass this on to him. Many thanks.

Hi Brian, Not living in Tetbury I am unable to help you with making contact with JOLLY family. I guess they came to Tetbury after I left the area. As you will have noticed very few people are interested enough to come on to this forum. I would suggest that you either drop the Webmaster a line asking for advice, or failing that ask for help through Tetbury Advertiser, a route I had taken some time ago. If you have any enquiries in respect of people, events etc. mid 30's through to early 50's drop me a line. Cliff B.

Greetings to:- Newish to Tetbury, Bograt, Normanspants, Paul, John ,Derek and anyone else interested. Well over a month now since I last made any comment on this forum, no replies, comments whatever. Must be someone out there, as the hits on the site keep rising. In fact I guess a phenomenal number for a seriously under used faction. I have scanned back to page 1 and picked up all of the above who were initially interested way back when. Any chance of any one posting a message, it may be to ask for information of events just out of your memory, do you know whereabouts of . How about some of the nick names from a few years ago, did you know them? are they still alive??? Here are a few I can remember or knew. "Sparrow, Doc, Jiggy, Tisty,Juggle,Chummer. I have just been dipping into the publication by Tetbury Historical Society, Tetbury. The Place and People. Read the entry by TROLLEY, knew him well in his schooldays and early emplyment. Come on let us hear from you wherever you are. Cliff "COOKY" Bryan.

Hi Cliff,
Still here, still occasionally looking in, sorry not to have replied, I just lost motivation and/or interest, and couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say.
Still think it should be registration only on here, to keep out the spammers and other idiots.
Incidentally, I vaguely remember Trolley, last seen in about 1980.

Hi Monica Mary, No good asking about GILLETTS, FAWKES,INTERNATIONAL STORES,TROOPER WITCHELL, Everyone remembers them, but how many are there now that can remember Q'ing up with a ration book in their hands to get what ever was on offer?. Is there anyone out there who like me bought blasting powder at 9d a pound, and fuse to use with same at 3d a yard. I guess we are lucky to be still alive after making "bangers" with it. If Gordon PULLEY is still out there, can he remember when we nearly set fire to the " Drum " (Prince of Wales). I guess Trooper was lucky not to have been arrested under the Explosives Act. I must admit that despite a reasonable memory, one or two businesses escape me. Shops either side of International, one became the Maple Leaf Cafe, but I remember it as a toy shop run by two elderly "sisters"?. On the other side a shoe shop, MILLWARDS There are one or two more, but I will leave those for another time. I only wish we had a few more interested viewers. Cliff.B. I know this is an old post and I am deeply sorry for that. Gordon Pulley is the younger brother of my Grandad, I would be so very interested to hear more about this. ;D

Reading a couple of posts back on this thread, I came across the nickname "Juggle". Well blow me down that jogged the memory. While standing in the grave yard in Tetbury (about 1980), A man shouted over the fence, "Hey Juggle, What you doing back round here?" After a very long conversation, held between my Grandfather and the man on the other side of the fence, I was informed by a rather embarrassed Grandfather, that as a lad he was known as Juggle's due to the size of his ears. ;D

Welcome SELINA. So glad to hear from someone who is interested in Tetbury way back. I picked up your previous post a couple of days ago. But lost the lot when sending. I use a Library computer and when the allotted time runs out everything goes with a short warning. Have just picked up your second post. I guess your Grandfather was named George. My schooldays from Infants, Tetbury C of E Boys, and Tetbury Grammar School were at the same time as Gordon, and shared all of our other times with the West Street Gang. We lost touch when we both joined the Regular Army, the last I heard of Gordon he was was serving in the Royal Engineers at the British Army Post Office in Millhill, in London. Other PULLEYS I can name were:- Walter, Rose, H/Ellen. George was quite a few years older, and there was a Sister who was in the WRENS and another Brother between her and Walter. I can see their faces but an unable to re-call their names. I have many memories of Tetbury and inhabitants. If you would like to know more contact me by way of personal message at :- cliff.no12hotmail.com Hopefully this post will be sent and received. Cliff B.
