Hi All, this is my first post, I wonder if you can help me? I'm looking for old maps of Tetbury (pre-1800-ish). I've contacted a couple of council offices and nobody seems to know where they're archived so I can take a look at them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Historian,
You can get a copy of an old Ordnace Survey Map showing Tetbury in 1899.
Anything earlier than that you will have to go to the archives and as Tetbury is in the county of Gloucestershire then they will now be in County Hall in Gloucester.

Hi Merlin. Yes, that's what I thought, but I've been in contact with GCC (twice!) who say that they have none, and that Tetbury Council has them somewhere. Tetbury says they don't...
I have the OS and one or two others BTW, thanks:)

I think you may have to persist try here for starters www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/archives Sounds like you were talking to a Jobsworth... you may even have to visit them... I'm planning a trip there to see what I can find there.

Well, that was easy. The woman at the office was very helpful, the Tetbury maps can be checked out any day of the week in Gloucester, thursdays late opening till 6, also open saturdays, 9 till 1.

Glad it was a success, I really need to pay them a visit and have a look at some of the old business directories.
Census records only go so far and tend to concentrate on individuals my interest is the businesses who, what and where they were around the town.
