Hello world! Following the last snowfall the town council wish to develop a system of helping folk with problems during emergencies - weather or any other. We realise as a community that some members are disadvataged when it comes to getting services etc. The idea is a simple one - not an all singing all dancing emergency plan but probably a help line at the offices with a councillor on call to complete a 24 hour cover. I've deliberately left this post fairly vague because I would like some community innovative thinking about the problems which we could address and how. Any views are welcome! Tony.

One of the problems I believe more vulnerable members of the community faced was one of actually getting out of the house for the most basic of errands. Could the council, perhaps, in setting up the helpline also canvas locally for volunteers who would provide a phone number. Then when conditions are as extreme as they have been the helpline would have access to people locally who could help at short notice? This would take some pressure off the emergency services who fielded a lot of calls on this matter. Canvassing for volunteers could take place through the Tetbury Advertiser, which is circulated through all households in Tetbury.

Thanks - that will be in the plan and working where and as I do I know of several people who freely offered help. The H&R council committee have discussed and there is a hope that we may be able to organise one of the "charitable help" organisations into the town as well.
