I'm afraid I have to agree BM. Plenty of people are viewing this discussion board, but no one says anything! It's fascinating how some communities have thriving discussion forums and yet others don't. Wotton under Edge and Nailsworth, for example, have very busy forums, others like Malmesbury have nothing (from what I could see, or rather not see). Tetbury has a perfectly good discussion forum that nobody bothers to use. It's a real shame

The number of posts have been going up recently - but unfortunately that's been the result of spam. The website's total hits have been going up recently too.
Is the relative quiet on the message board because not much happens in Tetbury?

It just needs a few people to be proactive and actually write something, rather than just sit back and read the few things that other people have put. I think enough happens in Tetbury doesn't it, but even if it doesn't there are plenty of other things in the world to discuss, like biscuits or species of chicken.

Well the spammers have certainly got hold of this site! If only they took time to do their research a bit better, they would surely know no one ever reads this message board! Never mind, the thread entitled "my mother is a belly dancer" was mildly entertaining for a moment or two.

The spammers don't need anyone to read the board - Google will see a link to their website and push up their ranking. The spammers seem to be Chinese websites.

Do you think it's worth making registration obligatory to try and stop the spammers?

Yeah, I've thought about doing that, but then I think it would put people off posting. Registration is fine for regular posters such as yourself, but anyone wanting to post as a one-off will be deterred. I don't know how the spammers are getting around the spam protection that already exists, and I reckon they'll probably find a way around the registration at some point.

Would agree with normanspants that registration should be made obligatory, this should stop spam postings. I'm a moderator on another forum which requires registration and we don't have the problems your experiencing. Guest posters don't tend to contribute very much to these boards I for one would rather see people joining if only to remain silent after one or two posts.

I think the site needs some advertising. Maybe some flyers ect to encourage more people to be proactive and persuade more people to join.

I agree, this board is pretty lame.
But it could be MUCH better.
Firstly the layout and look of this forum is not at all appealing. Maybe some money could be spent to get them redone? Considering how money is haemorrhaged in other ways in Tetbury, this would be a drop in the ocean.
Also, I'm quite sure that hardly anyone in Tetbury is aware of the existence of these boards. Advertise people! Maybe fliers through letter boxes, an artical/flyer in the Tetbury advertiser, posters in windows etc. Maybe encourage shop owners, club organisers etc to post here? Things such as weekly newsletters from clubs, up coming events etc.

I'm afraid other (non-website) priorities have taken over recently. Tetbury Online - and the message board - aren't owned by the local council, it's just my own slightly aging attempt. Sorry if it's not more widely used, but advertising it more widely isn't a realistic option unless someone else wants to do it, I'm afraid.

Jon, don't be so harsh on the webmaster. Yes the board is dated and not known about by all, but it is something (which I think you'll find is better than nothing). Full respect to the webmaster for keeping the site going for all these years, in his own precious time and presumeably (as hosting aint free) at his own expense.
I don't know who the webmaster is, but he is one of the few people in this town who is prepared to get off their arse and actually do something for the benefit of everyone. You seem to be a regular poster on here so obviously have time on your hands. How's about you do something useful with it - maybe offer to help update the site, if you have the expertise :-)

I agree not only is this board Lame the whole site is Lame.
This is Tetbury... Your Town The place where we live, work and hope to make a living.
As a Town our bread and Butter are the tourists and visitors who come here, we want them to come, we NEED them to come and as a town we do nothing.
Every Hotel. Pub, Restaurant, Cafe and Shop should have its very own page on this site, visited frequently to answer any questions, updated as often as possible.
A What's on again updated frequently.
There are many visitors to this site and quite a few have asked questions and being ignored.
They should be treated like customers, and as salespeople we need to learn if you ignore a customer you lose the sale.
It's too much work for any one person, this site is so lame even the Web Master doesn't bother responding to requests...
We need a Local Team People, any volunteers with Web Site smarts for starters ?
We all know our town is steeped in ancient History but sorry folks but this bit of it needs bringing into the 21 century and fast.
Respond or learn to enjoy as you watch the traffic drive through on their way to and from everywhere else.
