Help! We're trying to trace my wife's family but have struck a seemingly insurmountable problem. Mr wife's mother's maiden name was Elsie Wright ... we think. She was abandoned at a very early age and was brought up in an orphanage or children's home. As she died quite a few years ago and was somewhat reticent about her history (or even did not know much) we're not sure if her birth name was in fact Elsie Wright - and we have no birth certificate. We know she enlisted in the WAAF in 1941, and on her enlistment documents the next of kin section states "unknown". However, in the "to be informed in case of casualty" section there is a name, a Miss L. ???? (unreadable) of 31 Charlton Road, Tetbury and we are guessing she may have perhaps lived there before enlistment. We are clutching at straws here, but despite many years of living in Nottingham she still spoke with a "south west" accident and we were wondering if the home she was brought up in could have been somewhere in Gloucestershire. Her occupation prior to enlistment is given as "domestic servant" - maybe that could be a (very tenuous) clue. If anyone can suggest further areas of research, knows of a possible children's home, or even knows the history of 31 Charlton Road we would be extremely grateful.
Thanks for reading, Pete Brooks
