Hi Guys and thanks to Monica Mary for these additions.
You are quite right of course the Town of Tetbury is almost a graveyard as far as real shops are concerned and what's worse nobody seems to care.
We live in the middle of the countryside and can't buy fresh country produce. I guess the one exception is Jesse Smith the Butcher he at least supplies good quality meat and a few other things besides.
I am still waiting for someone to come along and give me an argument bit it seems everone is in agreement with me or they can't be bothered....
Sad really but what can I say ?

Not having any children of my own I don't think my opinion of the local schools would be a lot of help.
However I will pass your request onto people in the town and seek some genuine thoughts from parents, and maybe even a teacher or two and pass them on. Or better still come on here and answer you directly.
Give me until after the Easter Holiday and then keep your eye on the site... see what we can do.

Hi Monica Mary,
I am trying to recreate a series of street maps of business's at different periods in history to demonstrate the changing face of Tetbury.
Not easy because it wasn't until the advent of the general Postal delivery service that street numbers were required. Back then all you had to say was Mr. Soandso in Long Street...
Such a project may not be possible and I may have to settle for a list of commercial traders in the town on any given date.
However thank you for your input and I will see if I can spot them on a map of the town.
I think you would be horrified to see how few real shops the town has left, we have to go to Nailsworth for a decent Greengrocer. Philips the Baker became Hobbs and they no longer bake here I think that comes from Nailsworth as well.
And the call it progress!

Thanks Dax you beat me to the announcement.
I can also add that if I am available on the day I have agreed to guide small parties around the tour route.
For more details call into The Totally Pottery Shop in the Chipping Mall and they'll arrange it for you.
Or for guests of the Snooty Fox who have also been kind enough to show an interest.

Spammers are a real pain I agree but I think for the time being we are reasonably safe, so far this site is so little used it is hardly worth a Spammer's time to bother with us !
As for my research is concerned I'm afraid your all too recent stay here does not go far enough back but it might be interesting to see what shops you remember from back then just so people of Tetbury can get a feel for what they have lost. See my answer to Bee's question.
I have an extract from Pigot's directory of 1844 that shows what commercial traders were here back then but it's just a list with no addresses.
I think the Nostalgia thread idea might work with past Tetburians depositing their memories.

Hi Bee,
I fear you left it a little too late for me to do any real research on your behalf but you should be safe enough. The Coop always seems to be open not the cheapest store around but being slap bang in the middle it is convenient.
If you are a regular visitor to Tetbury you will know that unless you are a wood worm there is not a lot of food shops left to choose from.
I feel sure on Saturday everybody will be open and the fruit and veg stall will be in the market.
There is Tescos, of course, on London Road, and depending how fit you feel and where you are staying it is within walking distance. Take a Sherpa with you to help carry it all back, Tescos assumes everybody has a car !!!
Enjoy your visit.

Hi Normanspants....
I think if you're looking for gossip and friends of old you may have to come out of the closet and tell us who you really are and who you might remember from your time here.
Feel free to start a Nostalgia Thread and see what happens.
As you can see I have written one booklet about Tetbury and am working on another probably about all the Pubs and Inns that were once here.
But I am also trying to recreate the Town centre as it was in years gone by by finding out what shops were where so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated as well as any old photos.

If I am around I check in here most days to see what...if anything... has changed !
At the bottom of the page there is a short summary of who was on line during the previous 24 hours and how many Guest views there has been.
So these questions are for the Guests;
"What brought you to this Site ?
"What were you looking for ?"
"Did you Find what you were looking for ?"
"If Not why did you leave without Comment ?"
Some of us want this Web Site to be the font of all knowledge for Tetbury.
We welcome questions and if we don't know the answer we will at least try and find it for you or point you in the right direction.
So please, if you are a guest or visitor Please don't just pass by stop and at least say Hello! If for no other reason than to convince me I'm not talking to myself !

Your voice has been heard and we will pass it on, sometimes it's easy for one voice to be ignored but when many voices are raised then officials will start to listen... as if their futures depend upon it !

Here's a couple of images I found online entitled The Royal Flying Corps at Leighterton circa 1914 - 1918. The pictures are extremely faded but it may bring back memories. Attachments:

Hi Dax,
I agree with you the only time this place really comes alive is Wool-sack Race day and it's a Great day of Family Fun which owes a lot to the private and highly active organisational group.
This is a historical town with well over 1,300 years of history... not that you would ever know about it... It was once one of if not the premier Wool Market towns in the Cotswolds.... you might think that might warrant a mention or even it's own museum.... But Alas No !
We got a police museum and rumour has it that due to Council cutbacks the police will be moving back in there when they shut the Tetbury Police Station down..
One quick suggestion I would make why not set up a new message Thread in the Events section about Your fairs and who and what you need there.

Hi Cliff, Here is a picture of the White Hart in all its glory in the 1930's showing you that grand entrance off Chipping Street. Notice the White Hart above the door. Removed by Maxwell Joesph when he Renamed the Hotel the Snooty Fox in the 1960's. Further information on the Canteen, apparently it was a favorite drinking haunt of the Polish who were billeted at Babdown airfield out on the Dursley Road. The American GI's to which you refer were indeed billeted in the a house next to the old Grammar school and I believe in the Ormond's Head. These American troops were working on a highly secret model of Omaha Beech landing site in preparation for the D Day landings in Normandy. The model was created in the old Malt House off the Chipping. I wonder if there are any pictures remaining or indeed existing ? Any Old GI's out there with fond memories of Tetbury circa 1942 ?
