Ok - I am thinking of moving to tetbury or at least the general area and I need some info. I will be coming from Somerset and it's difficult to get a true feel of the place when visiting.
The lack of use of this site ( compared to Nailsworth's site ) worries me a bit - is there no community spirit here or is everyone just too busy?
Hoodies? I have never seen any in Tetbury! Where I live is pretty much 'chav' infested and violent crime is high. Tetbury really doesn't strike me as that kind of place....but am I missing something?
School - SWR seems to have taken a bit of a beating on here. is is as bad as people say?
What are the people of Tetbury like? Friendly? Snooty? What is the feel of the community?
Need help - and if it stimulates a bit of discussion then all to the good!

Hi I don't know of any other Tetbury forums I would suggest that you obtain the small A4 size monthly Tetbury Advertiser magazine published by Tetbury Lions Club it's free the postage charge per copy is 75p. The editor Barry Gibbs can be contacted via barrygibbs@rfx.org.uk this publication should at least give you an incite into the town. Good luck.

Tetbury is a friendly place to live. Local people organise many activities that benefit local causes - the Woolsack races held annually on Whit Monday raises lots of money which is given back to local groups. As already mentioned the local Advertiser magazine gives a good impression of what is available locally. Both schools in Tetbury are good, St Mary's Primary and Sir William Romney's comprehensive. SWR draws students from a wide catchment and has a good reputation for pastoral care. It's results are steadily improving and the awarding of Arts status has led to many new initiatives. An arts display space is currently under construction and should be open next term. As often happens only people that want to moan post comments on this site - the ones that are happy with things don't feel the need to say so! If you do move to this area you would be made to feel very welcome.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone - you have put my mind at rest about a few things that I was worrying about.
You make it sound welcoming and friendly which is how I really hoped that it would be. Thanks for the info on the schools too - good to know that they are decent as the schools where we currently live are really not great.
Looking forward to it!

i lived in avening, and i hated it, BUT and its a big jennifer lopez, i couldn't drive, and i still can't, so moved back south, its a great place, with really nice people, but i have "family" there so i suppose its easy for me to say, if you can drive, and really want life to be relaxed then yes, as someone who has tried it, do it. but be warned, if you come from a big city, it can be hard to take in, and no offence to anyone, but the pace of life there is very slow compared to the hussle and bussel, of a larger mor eindustrius town, but like i said, if i could drive, (fingers crossed) we would be back up there in a heart beat.

Yes, people don't really know of Tetbury Online. There is lots of community spirit, you get to know everyone in all the shops and in some of the houses really well. There are really no hoodies in Tetbury, But the mop fair does attract some teenagers. Everyone has different veiws on SWR, it depends what side you see of it! Is is great for the people in Tetbury as it is close, but not everyone goes there, they choose another village school or a private school. People in Terbury are friendly, and we are all a community, I do not know everyone in the town (as it is big!) But, I have got to know the people in my street and in the streets near me and in the shops. I hope this has helped you!

Heya Clara, just like to tell you about the schools in tetbury. i know people do say bad things about SWR, well thats because there are lots of bad things about the school!! I have recently left the school and moved onto college, luckly for me they closed the Sixth Form as i was just about to attend it, I say LUCKLY form me because i really don't like the way the school has changed over the past 5 years!! 1. The majority of the school are disruptive and stop others form learning, most students spent their time stood outsode the classroom or outside the heads office. 2. They have NO policy on bulling which is a big problem at that school!!oh no sorry they do have a policy, its called pretend there isn't a bullying problem in our school! 3. They have spend LOADs of money on turning the s**t hole into a preforming arts school WHAT?? they should have spent that money on making the school look better, or even paying the wages of soem new maths teachers as MATHS is there main downfall ( well one of the many). 4. Take my advice DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SWR!!!!!! (only if you want them to join in with the rebels and disrupt the school or on the other hand have their learning disrupted by other students) I'm am Writing this from experience of the school As for Tetbury itself its a nice friendly place, well thats if you don't go out at night when all the kids are drinking on the streets (know from experience). The town is getting to over crowded and there are to many houses being built! Hope i have helped you. Resident of Tetbury

SWR pretty much had to become a performing arts college - the government wants all secondary schools to have a specialism, and as other local schools had nabbed all the best specialisms (technology, sport, languages), SWR had to settle for Performing Arts.
Unfortunately the government then changed the rules, so Deer Park School in Cirencester is also becoming a Performing Arts school, which makes a nonsense of the whole thing really.

SWR has worked hard over the past year to address the issues of disruption in lessons. Needless to say this is not "most" of the students as suggested by "Just Browsing" but a very small minority! A new sanctions process has been introduced and students are both penalised for bad behaviour and rewarded for good. It is working well and all students understand what is acceptable behaviour and know that they will receive sanctions if they do not comply. Secondly when any school is awarded a specialism most of the money which comes with it has to be spent in certain areas such as capital projects. It is not possible to move the money to pay for extra maths teachers for instance. One of the benefits of being an Arts college is not that everyone takes Drama as a GCSE subject but that all teachers are able to incorporate aspects of the arts into their subjects. This enables students to express themselves confidently in many ways and thus equips them well for life after school.

This is a response to 'Resident' You sound like you are a teacher or governor at the school!! Can i ask 'How would you know what the behaviour in SWR is like' I am 17 and i left SWR last July, i have experienced the school, i also have siblings attending the school and i also have friends and cousins there as well. I know what it is like and how disrupted a lot of the students are. The 'rules' and 'policies' they DON'T work!!! I used to have detentions and after school detentions and most of my year group did for most of years 7 to 9, but no one stopped being disrupted it carried on and on and now it is even worse than when i was there, and i know that for a fact as i said before that my siblings attend there. As for the performing arts rubbish i do understand that there is not much that the school can do about it, but i don't think that there was any need for them to change the Logo and the House names. My parents and grandparents went to SWR and they had the logo and house names, its part of tetburys history! There is one teacher to blame for that and HE doesn't even come from tetbury!! Thanks Ex-student at SWR
