Hi Monica and Norman, Without looking went straight into our usual forum without looking further down the list. Attached a message, please read. I agree with all of your comments, and also those of Webmaster. I have now learnt that one must read the tags at the top before making a reply, especially when changing forums. I hope I am making sense. Hopefully this message, the third attempt leaves here OK. Happy New Year. Cliff

Greetings HILLS Guest, So nice to have some one else come on board with memories of Tebury, although you fall short in years when compared with Monica Mary and myself. Not so sure about Paul and Normasnpants however. Still, glad to have you on board. I remember PEGLARS sweet shop and garage way back in the 1940's , they did repairs but had no cars for sale like the present. VICK was the Butcher just a couple of doors away, followed by HEALEY ? Dairy shop. then the Greyhound. Next door was the Police Station and House wher Sgt.EDWARDS lived, he had two sons around my age, CHARLES and JOHN. Now you have found the forum I hope you will come back again. If Paul comes on to this message, I wonder if he could advise me of the Psalm played by the three hourly chimes. I did post a message in respect of the bells etc to Monica and Paul, but in haste lost it. Not having my own computor, my time is often restricted at the Library. No complaints though, it is all free to use. Floreat Tetburia, Cliff.B

Hi Monica Mary, Beginning of the week, usual scroll around to see who wants me. After replying to Czech Republic and Belgium, and not having to contact Moscow for the time being, as my norm , I came to seriously underused forum. I feel we should re-name the forum, have you noticed how many hits there have been since we both got in touch ? In reply to you enquiry, in respect of Daylight saving, NO we have not changed yet, I am led to understand it takes place on the the last Saturday in March when we go forward one hour. Can you remember when we had Double British Summer time when it was light until well after 10 at night. Harvest time Pub extensions until 10.30 so that Farm Workers could work until nearly dark and still get a drink before going to bed. I guess you ran across the six o'clock swill when you first arrived out there. Sorry must close quickly have just received my 3 minute shuit down warning. Bye for now, Cliff. Also directed to any of our readers, there appear to be a few but they never put anything on line.

Hi Monica Mary, No good asking about GILLETTS, FAWKES,INTERNATIONAL STORES,TROOPER WITCHELL, Everyone remembers them, but how many are there now that can remember Q'ing up with a ration book in their hands to get what ever was on offer?. Is there anyone out there who like me bought blasting powder at 9d a pound, and fuse to use with same at 3d a yard. I guess we are lucky to be still alive after making "bangers" with it. If Gordon PULLEY is still out there, can he remember when we nearly set fire to the " Drum " (Prince of Wales). I guess Trooper was lucky not to have been arrested under the Explosives Act. I must admit that despite a reasonable memory, one or two businesses escape me. Shops either side of International, one became the Maple Leaf Cafe, but I remember it as a toy shop run by two elderly "sisters"?. On the other side a shoe shop, MILLWARDS There are one or two more, but I will leave those for another time. I only wish we had a few more interested viewers. Cliff.B.

Another couple to test you:[ Aubrey FOWLES, IVES, SATTELEY, MURRAYS. HARRIS,(Draper) That all for now folks, very busy trying to organise my next trip to Moscow and all of the awkward things involved, Visas etc.

Hi Monicamary, Glad to see that you are back to using the forum. Nice to sit in the evening sun with a glass of the red stuff. Here it is wet, cool and grey and Horlicks at bed time. Yes, Mrs CLARK/E did keepthe shop on the corner of West Street, and her Son Fred was the local gas fitter/meter colloector. I still remember him emptying the penny slot gas meter we used to have. Fuel was a lot cheaper then. Yes there were two PEGLAR/ER shops next door to each other, a sweet shop and a grocery shop. In between Mrs C. and the PEGLARS' when I was a lad was a model aero shop. We spent many happy hours there , followed by happy days flying the models at Larkhill. I do not remember the name of the shop keeper but he was the projectionist at the Palace Picture House. Anothet couple of name s for your cerebral exercise. Who were, what were they and where were they ? Fent PEGLAR, Miss GOODRICH, Sadler WEST, Frank HILLS, Doris VIRGO. Could send more but have received 3 minute warning. Keep in touch, Cliff. Glad to see you are exercising the grey brain cells

Hi to any one out there, With thanks to Lewis CARROL for the following quote. "The time has come the Walrus said, to talk of many things! " Now that the furore has died down, does anyone want to set up conversation. Willing to talk about any thing. If interested can help with memories your Parents/Grandparents mentioned of a Tetbury child hood mid-30's to early 1950's. Maybe if you are as old as me, "Do you remember when?) Will be nice to hear from you. Cliff.B

WEBMASTER. I agree that we could possibly amend the title of seriously under used forum to something more appropriate. Have you any suggestions ? Be pleased to see what other readers think, and welcome their suggestions. Cliff B.

Greetings to all of my readers. Now back from Malta. Quite perturbed to see all of the angst in the last couple of pages. If I re-call correctly without looking back to previous pages it was suggested that the subject matter could be something like " Do you remember when ?" giving Tetbury ex-pats the chance to go down memory lane. It was also an opportunity for anyone interested in how it used to be and ask the question. MODERATOR. Is it possible to set up another Forum along those lines? It could be that anyone still living in Tetbury would then have no need to access a forum that is of no interest to them. We could then go on to use words of more than the norm of four letters. Nice to see another reader. Greetings Charlie K. Hope to see you in print again. MONICA MARY Will be in touch in the usual way once I have got back into my routine. Made several attempts at a cyber cafe but owing to the slightly different format lost out at every attempt. It really does go to show you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Also tried to answer Phillip H with the same result. Happy New Year to you all out there in the ether. Cliff.

Greetings to all of my Readers from Sunny Malta. So sorry not to have been in touch. But where do we go from here?. I have only just picked up pages 3 and 4 and I am quite appalled by the attitude of Mr Tetbury Still. I appreciate that it seems he has never been any where, done anything of interest in what seems to be a very small limited life. But thank you for keeping your comments above the gutter level. I shall still continue using this forum. From what I have seen of the blogs, most of them really insult my intelligence , and a wide majority of other people. I decline to answer further. Take heart Norma I thank you for your witty and pithy replies.
Cliff.

G'Day to everyone Down Under. How Bist to all of the Tetbury readers. I know wer' that ther' blackbird be !, dus't thee ?. Thanks for coming back Monica, I also followed Tetbury Town until I left home. Some more names to those you mentioned:- Len LAW, Wickey MOULDER. The DAVENPORTS were Harry, who was the Goalkeeper until he broke a leg, and John. When Colin DYER kept the Drum, ( Prince of Wales , for the the young folk out there), he had a pre-war photograph of the team on the wall of the bar. His Father Charlie, and Bill CLEAVER ( Trainer ) were on it as well as at least one GROVES. I wonder if any one out there still has a copy?. John. Did not have chance to visit big brother Jim. Since I was last in Town he has moved from St. Mary's Road. Did you go to School with my Brother, Walter "Titch" BRYAN ? If so I should think he would know of the where abouts of your old teacher. Is Mike still around ? Once the Drum shut there is no where to meet up and go back in time. Used to meet up with Trevor MARSH and Ticker NEWMAN AN whenever I made a flying visit. Other Readers. Is there anything you would like to hear what Tetbury was like from the mid 30's to early 50's?. Get in touch please. Cliff B.

Hi monica & Family, and any other readers. Have just returned from Tetbury, apart from Family not one familiar face. Where are they all ? Did not have time to visit St. Saviours and check on recent additions. If not there must all be wrapped up safe and well in some Old Folks Home. Traffic horrendous, I only hope that the new traffic enforcers get their act together. Saw no evidence of them. A pity they have no payment by achievment. An enquiry on behalf of myself. Has anyone any record or knowledge of when the old Tetbury Town stopped playing at a pitch in London Road. I can re-call being taken there by my Father as a child. I am sure that it was about half way between Northfield Road and the Pike, and to rear of the Army Supply Depot known as "The Dump " I also remember a pond in the field and a story of a Referee being thrown into it. A story, or true ? I would love to know. If any one would like to make contact apart from this forum, please post a message here and I will come back to you using my E-mail address. Sorry unable to help you Monica. With my limited knowledge I can only guess you must now be a member. My problem was the fact that I was putting in my pass word in low case when it shopuld have been high Case. Keep in touch, glad to see this Forum is starting to be used. Cliff B.

Hi Monica & Family, John & Family . I really am glad I persevered with trying to make contact with Tetburians . Not exactly sure of the date when the SEAL family arrived homeles in Tetbury. Unable to remember how long they were with us until getting somewhere to live. I will be in Tetbury in 36 hours visiting my Brother In St. Mary's Road, directly opposite where Jim lives. Will call and have a chat all being well. Cutwell. Can any of you remember the name of the little old lady who lived in the small cottage on the right hand side of the path that went up to where Don SHERWOOD lived? Many was the Sunday evening when a group of us used to sit on her door step listening to her playing the harmonium and singing hymns . Keep in touch. Cliff B.

Greetings to all of my readers. Hopefully I have at last cracked it to send messages. What a terrible thing old age is. Nice to see Monica has hit on. For other correspondents we have been in contact for a short while. We were in the same class together way back in the 1940's. Having composed and lost three message since my last posting I do not know really where to restart. Reason for blue parts on White Hart. When the Armistice was declared in 1918 the figure over the side entrance was painted by Australian Airmen. It must have been good quality paint to have lasted until hotel was re-named ( 1950's or 1960's ?) John from Tasmania. It must have been great to have been met by a fellow Tetburian on your arrival down under. In one of my lost messages I was enquiring if you were connected to the SEAL family who arrived in Tetbury after being made homeless in the Blitz on Bristol. You can imagine my surprise to wake up one morning to find three unknown children tucked in at the other end of our double bed. Jim, Mike and Pat are the only ones I now remember. Is there anyone out there who remembers clearing the Church belfry of six years accumulated rubbish deposited by Jackdaws between 1939 and 1945 in order that the Vicyory could be rung in. Did any older member of your family help ring a quarter/half peal on the bells on 14th November 1948? Why does this date still have significance in Tetbury now? Still lots of memories of Tetbury for the years 1930's to 1950's. Are they of any interest to subscribers to this forum ? Be pleased to hear from other forum users. Hope to be in Tetbury for the night of 4th and 5th December, with a photo of Tetbury Grammar School pupils for 1946, hoping to identify some of those in other entries.
