Hi Merlin, You are quite correct about the censor filter. I had the same problem some time ago in describing savoury meat BALLS ? as supplied by Jesse CULL from the cleanest, well scrubbed and polished premises. On my last vist to the Metropolis !! I noted that his name in large gilt letters are still on show. Are they now. From the filtering in my entry, I seem to think it has American word definitions. I am right ! a spell check brings up an alternative for savoury. All for now, Cliff B.

Good on yer Monica for stealing my thunder before the " Sun de Rise this morning ", my apolgies to Rolf for stealing his title. I seem to re-call that the Eight Bells was the most used of those extant in my youth. For information of Merlin, I came up with thirteen, still racking my brains where the other one was. Must concur and agree on twelve. I originally said the United Services Club and The Canteen were not in the count. Can any one out there remember the location of The Canteen ? Old age does have it's pitfalls. Nice to see the hits have doubled in a couple of days. Monica I still owe you a response, do not despair. I promised Tuesday or Wednesday. But unscheduled changes of flights have meant a lot of hair tearing and sizzling key boards. Been called on in respect of burial plots in St. Saviours for Grandparents etc. Apparently there is a move to plot older Un-marked graves. Details on www.tetburyparishchurch.com.uk Not had time to access as yet. Like Merlin always ready to help. Cliff.B.

Hi Merlin, Sorry to say , no longer a resident. But, do visit from time to time, mainly for family reasons, or passing through en-route to pastures green. Nice few hits in a very short time, look forward to more in the future. Would like to meet up on one of my flying visits and take up the opportunity of a social drink and the chance to remenisce I only regret not having questioned my Grandparents about their life in Tetbury, and their memories. I remember my Great Grandmother who died aged 88 in 1938, what could she have told me. My Grandparents are mentioned in one or other of the books of recent printings, a chip shop in West Street. I am able to name and identify the unknowns in the photograph of the Tebury Grammar School football team of 1948, should any one be interested. One of them lived in the " Drum and Monkey ", pre-DYER days. Last had a drink there during the weekend when it was drunk dry before closing. Keep coming back. Cliff B.

Hi Merlin, Appreciate all you have come back to me with, keep it coming. Look out for all of those guys with pillows with eye holes over their heads. I know the feeling. Several years ago was sat waiting for lunch in one of the few remaining Tetbury Hostelries. Owing to the loud bray, could not help hearing the diatribe from a gentle man in the corner expounding his knowledge of Tetbury. He was some what abashed when as I was leaving, I quietly aked him if he knew where the Workhouse once was. As it was virtually on the other side of the road. All was quiet as I left after pointing it out to him and adding to his KNOWLEDGE. There I have done it again. No doubt I will be suitably chastised again. I guess my sense of humour is not to every ones taste. Having been told off for suggesting commercial house cleaning products. Come back I.T.M.A. all is forgiven. Were any of our readers at the Concert in the 1940's, when Tommy HANDLEY and the ITMA company appeared in the Institute to raise money in a Spitfire, Tank, or Battleship Week??? I was. Anyone remember Toc.H and T.O.F.F.S, or R.T.Pole Flying Club?? Had a few drinks in all of the now defunct Pubs, but only thirteen in my time, not counting " the Canteen ". Looking forward to any replies from who ever. Cliff. B.

Hi Merlin, Something stirred in a very aged brain box in respect of the naming of Tetbury. Attending Tetbury CofE school in late30's, I seem to re-call a framed text on the wall in the Big Boys Classroom , giving information. After all of these years all I can remember of the text is that Tetbury was once called TETA'S BERG. I wonder if there are any other readers younger than myself who attended up until the demise of the school can remember this text and its contents. Anyone reading from HOTS, have you any information, is it correct, and when ?? Keep up the good work. Cliff B.

Another well done MERLIN, As a fairly regular visitor, and contributor, albeit some time sarcastically, nice to seen your offer and intentions. Ex- Tetburian, born and bred, I have many memories of a War time Tetbury, and I am also willing to help where I can. I still have family in the Town and can seek help there. As they say Down Under, Good on Yer. Cliff, B,

Fielder POOLE. As a child living in West Street, Tetbury from 1933 to 1949, knew Fielder POOLE by sight. He owned a field below Bath Bridge and " our gang " often used it as a playground, never abusing or causing any damage. Stream running through the field eventually runs into the Wiltshire Avon. in the spring and Summer we studied Great Crested Newts, now protected. In the field was a pond that we slid on, walked on played on, whatever, when frozen. Mr POOLE always broke the ice, a good thing on reflection, no one ever got drowned. At some stage when dried out pond was dug out to reveal that it was square and stone lined and resembled an upside down pyramis. About a year ago re-newing child hood, over looked the field, to my dismay fond has now been filled in and made into a grass bank. A shame as I would have thought it would have been of some historical/agricultural interest. I also remember an old white horse living in the field for many years, and being there when it was put down. The arches of Bath Bridge was another play ground especially when raining. Hope above is of some interest, you never know it may bring a response from one of the many readers, who never make an entry. Cliff B.

Professor CLANCY enquirer, Using a Library outlet, do not have any details with me. Not currently living in Tetbury have no idea who to ask. From time to time I get a copy of Tetbury Advertiser, always enjoy the input form H.O.T.S. ( History of Tetbury Society ) perhaps some one involved with them could have a little information. Worth a try. Cliff B.

Brain/Lambley enquirer, Like your good self I was born at the top of Gumstool Hill. I guess you do not have as many years on the Planet as myself. I was always told that I was born in the " Workhouse " I have no knowledge of when the building was set up as a Maternity Hospital. An early memory from late 1930's schooldays is of children having their tonsils removed there by a local Doctor, and not at the Cottage Hospital. Hope I have been a help. Cliff. B. Ex.Pat. Tetburian.

JUNO, Have noted your message of some MONTHS ago ! Have been aware, but unable to open up to read same until today. Came on line today, found format has altered, Lo and behold I managed. Agree wholeheartedly, GHOST TOWN, have tried hard to rattle the ancient bones. As you can see without sucess. Sorry, I do not agree with Face Book, and do not subscribe. Foolishly replied to one of my known American E- contacts. Immediately overwhelmed by what almost amounted to porn. Then received many messages from other E- mail friends, quite upset that their details had been picked up and abused. Quite a hard job to assure them I was not responsible. As you may well know I have been well and truly PISHED off. Currently all is well. Cliff.B.

ALL READERS. I guess I am still wasting my time using this forum. Have read elsewhere, " lots of hits, no replies" Trying again. Is there anyone out there that has, or knows anyone who has a group photo of Tetbury Grammar School taken in October 1946. I have a copy and have been trying to name some of those in it. Both myself and Monica GROVES now in Australia have tried but rhere are still a few blanks. Please come back if you can help. Cliff B.

Webmaster, Why is it I am unable to post my comments on " Seriously underused Forum ? " Have you changed something that I am unaware of ? I book in using my pass word, complile, move to post , then get ad quiz, what is this, what is needed to proceed. Where am I going wrong. My last successful entry was a tongue in cheek, light hearted post on " can anyone reccomend a good cleaner " it was a pity that my humour is a little dated, and not appreciated. Cliff B.
