As a recentish new resident to Tetbury I have found it fairly difficult to integrate into the Town as, in my mid-30's, I feel too young to join some of the Society's and am too old (and quite frankly not skillfull enough) to play football or rugby!!! Having been here 18 months now I am quite content, but it was slow progress.
It is a shame that this site is not better used as, for people like myself, it could be a valuable resource in allowing interaction between those with a better knowledge of the town and what goes on and those who aren't Tetbrarian by birth or schooling.
So my question is why isn't it better used? Nailsworth's is overflowing with new posts and Cirencester's has closed to new members as it can't cope... What do you think makes Tetbury so different to our near neighbours??
(PS. I have emailed the Advertiser asking them to publicise this website, see if it can get some more traffic....let's see what happens!).

Thanks all for your suggestions, sadly I couldn't get anybody local to take a booking for the job. Perhaps it is too small with all the building work etc going on?? In any case I've had to get a plumber from B&Q and an electrician from Npower, unfortunate really as I'd have preferred to stay local. But I guess getting the jobs done comes first!!

Can anyone recommend a good Corgi plumber and a reliable electrician based locally please? I have a gas fire to fit (hence the corgi-man) and want to install wiring for an electric shower (hence the electrician!). Unfortunately, working my way through the Denton's directory I am receiving nothing but answerphones, on which I duly leave messages and receive no replies!!!
I have, in the end, booked appointments with Npower to fit the electrics and B&Q to fit the fire, both of whom are sending tradesmen from different parts of the country. It seems crazy that I can't put the business towards a local fellow. Can anyone recommend any of the above that will answer their phone, or at least return messages??

Somewhat sadly I'm having to reply to my own post, clearly Tetbury Online remains a secret resource...either that or my admission to being an incomer means I am not to be encouraged!!!! ;D
Anyway, you'll be pleased to hear that I have sorted New-Years Eve. We are going to the Close Hotel for their masked Ball. Second choice was Whatley Manor, but taxi's in Tetbury on New Years Eve I am not expecting to be easy to arrange!!
For those who may find themselves suffering from this dilema, the Ormond is also doing a black tie do. It may be a bit snobbish, but we decided against there as it is a decent drinking pub if you're with the lads but, after some experiences with obnoxious members of Malmesbury FC, it's not somewhere I'd take my wife.....

Hi
it's that time of year and I am trying to organise New Years Eve for a small group of us (all in our 30's). Ideally we want to go to a black tie event in or around Tetbury/Ciren/Malmes (you get the idea). We are fairly new to the area and as such don't have a traditional venue to call upon. Does anyone have any ideas or experiences of such New Years events?

I cannot comment on business rates etc as I have no idea what they are. However, I would love to be able to buy fruit and veg from a local greengrocer. At the moment I buy fresh veg from a farm shop in Eastington, as well as (and I shudder to admit it) from Tesco. Meat always comes from the butcher and fish from Williams in Nailsworth I dread to think how many food miles my quest to "buy local" adds!!!
I would prefer not to have to use Tesco at all, but it does have its uses. However, in terms of fresh produce a greengrocer and a fishmonger in Tetbury would be amazing. There is an argument that they would not be viable due to insufficient support, however my (anecdotal) experience of small towns is that this may not be true. I used to live in Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham, and they have a thriving greengrocer and butcher, despite the presence of a Tesco and a Lidl. I have also lived in Bideford, Devon, and despite several supermarkets, a greengrocer, butcher and a fishmonger, all survived and thrived. In fact the fishmonger was also the chip shop (which was a great idea!!).
So fingers crossed that instead of the trendy and the kitsch, one of our stores may one day fill this void (though perhaps I won't hold my breath)....
